When is the last time you sat down and considered where you are most tempted to sin? James 1:14 tells us “each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.” Whether it is “the desires of the flesh, desires of the eyes, or the pride of life” (1 Jn. 2:16), often there is one area where we find ourselves most vulnerable. But are you aware of where that is?
We can be assured the Devil is aware of our weaknesses and actively looking for ways to entice us to sin. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us he “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour,” waiting for the right moment to strike. But if we know our weaknesses, we can put on the whole armor of God (Eph. 6:11) and stand firm when Satan attacks.
One way to defend ourselves is to take an honest inventory of our lives. 2 Cor. 13:5 says to “examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith.” We must examine not only what we believe, but how we behave when no one is looking. James 4:7 reminds us to “submit yourselves to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” We cannot resist what we have not first honestly acknowledged.
So today, let us pray Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” May that examination refine us — our faith more precious than gold tested by fire — to result in praise and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:7). Make this your daily prayer and watch how God strengthens us in the places we are most weak.
