Bread of Life

Bread of Life

Have you ever thought about what happens to food once you eat it?  Scientists tell us that as we chew our food and it passes through our bodies, it is slowly digested, giving us the strength and energy to live.  Without food, our bodies waste away. Just like our physical bodies, our spiritual body requires nourishment to survive.

In John 6:22-71, Jesus gives us what is known as the Bread of Life discourse.  In it, he tells us that we must partake of him.  In verse 51 he says “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.”  What is this bread that Jesus is talking about?

In verse 63, Jesus clarifies that “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”  If this sounds familiar, it echoes what Jesus said when tempted by Satan in Matthew 4:4, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

We cannot survive spiritually if we don’t constantly partake of his word and incorporate it into our lives.  As Solomon wrote in Proverbs 24:13-14, “My son, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste. Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” So make sure to partake of the Bread of Life every day and let it provide you with strength and energy throughout your life.
